Preparing for MMU Graduation

Congratulations to the 2008 MMU Graduates. KUDOS to Jade, Brooke & Terri for helping us pull it all together!!!!! The graduates played "Let's Make a Deal" with their homework layouts (which we loved all looking at), then the top 3 prizes were auctioned: Catha Duhe won 2009 CCL; Valine Laborde won the Scraparatus & accessories; and Heather Banker won a 12x12 Album; Sandra Davis & Terri Colclough joined in the fun to bid on some completed layouts!!! We ended the night as the graduates created a Scrapbook Notebook to hold sketches & shopping lists. They did an awesome job. Thanks to Christy for the inspiration of the book (my Christmas gift).

I know that Mother's Day has passed for many of you, but my mom lives out of town and is coming in this week so we celebrate Mother's Day this weekend!!! I hope all of you had a wonderful Mother's Day--i hope you felt honored and deeply loved and appreciated on your special day!!!

Indulge me just a few moments, as I share with you just how much I ADORE my Mom . . . I don't know what I'd do without her. You know as we get older, we have more mortal thoughts, so i guess just thinking what would I have done without her this year is such a scary thought. My mom spent 4 weeks with my family after my surgery making sure that I followed all (or most) of the rules, rested and ate properly to recover the best I could. While I believe John is the most awesome husband and takes really good care of me, NO ONE CAN DO WHAT MOTHER'S Do!!!! Who else could a 45 (ouch) year old woman call for sympathy after she does things she knows she shouldn't while recovering from back surgery? I mean, really. Anyone else might have laughed, or made me feel guilty for overdoing it, BUT I can take comfort in her genuine sympathy and words of "do better next time" advice. When you become a mom you REALLY appreciate your mom a lot more, for the little things that she never complained about or did without; As i grow older, I learn even more about my mom, i have little flashes in time where i learn something new, and suddenly my whole perspective on her changes. WOW-if only i could be the mom she was to me!!!! I know I wouldn't be the woman I am today without her guiding influence in my life. So don't forget to honor your mom, she is the reason you are such a wonderful person!!!!! CHALLENGE, create a layout or a mini album honoring your mom, What I lOVE About my Mom . . ." Is it the way she makes people feel, or her easy laugh, or the fact that no matter what the weather, and no matter how far she had to drive, that she never, never missed a chance to be there for you. Share & Tell Binder Scrapbook

To all of you who took classes on Saturday, thank you so much for making my last MMU class such a positive and wonderful experience. I have been teaching MMU classes for Memory Mania since 2003 on a variety of topics and themes, and each class has been so rewarding to me not only in the process of creating the class, subject matter, and handouts, but to spend a couple of hours away from home and sharing my passion for scrapbooking with ladies who really "get it!" I haven't tried out Cricut Design Studio yet, but as soon as I do I'll post what I have done with it. Thank you so much Darlene for spearheading the gift and the cake- you got me to cry and I swore I wouldn't! We are planning our big move to North Carolina in July, so I will still be around shopping and creating layouts for the Master's team in May and June. Thanks to ALL of my former students. It has truly been a pleasure.

What a Yummy Class!!!!

Thanks to everyone that participating in the Recipe Album class. Nikki did an INCREDIBLE job prepping & teaching this class, it set the tone perfectly for the wonderful treats at the end of class. The album came out SOOOO cute and I can't wait to try all of the recipes that were shared. OMG, i have no idea where we will put MORE new stuff, i guess, check the ceilings when you walk in. Christy just called to say the PRIMA shipment arrived today with really cool stamps, and some new papers. Here is a couple of pictures we took at CHA.

Friday Inspiration

OK, we've LOVED this beautiful weather, but it looks like we're in for a scrapbook weekend-weather is supposed to be yucky SO head on over to Memory Mania to get some fun time to scrap with.

Maureen Gorman created this precious layout "Hanah Montana" using the Luxe papers-check out her ribbon hanging from the flower-she used ribbon stiff and it came out so cute. KUDOS Maureen!!!!

Blackboard-Hottest product at CHA

Blackboard was the hottest product at CHA and it the students in Deneen's"What's Hot" class, agreed, this is an awesome, versatile product.

Here are just a few of the choices in the store:

Chipboard has been a staple in scrapbooking hobby since introduced a few years ago at CHA. Chipboard offered a versatile product to almost all levels of scrapbooking interest. Some like it for its low profile and light weight. For those scrappers that like more lumpier like chipboards as yet another way to add fun and dimension to their pages. We use chipboard so often to add a little dimension without a lot of bulk. Yet chipboard has its drawbacks-Plain chipboard usually needs something done to it: painting, covering with paper, stamping, etc. Sure the occasional naked chipboard piece was fine! Several companies introduced blackboard, our favorites were the Cosmo Cricket blackboard chipboard & even has overlays if you don't want black on a specific layout; and Maya Road has cool new blackboard mini albums. Both products are in stock so stop in soon to see them. Lots of comments from customers are that they are already colored, no painting is needed. You can use it covered or as it comes. And because it is black all the way through, Blackboard can be cut without having to go back again and finish edges.

In addition to albums, Cosmo Cricket introduced BlackBoard shapes and alphabets for their four new lines. Like previous lines they also released die cuts to match the black chipboard pieces. But this is just one option for these versatile little pieces of scrapbooking magic! Consider trying some of these techniques recommended by Cosmo Cricket:
Drawing on with colored pencils or crayons
Paint (the whole thing or just parts)
Stamping on with chalk inks, Staz-On, Stickles, etc.
Spray with Glimmer Mist
Decorate with rub-ons
Cover with crackle paints, Stickles, glossy accents, crackle accents
Leave blank or combine a few of the above techniques!

NEW BlackBoard offers all the wonderful aspects of chipboard with the added ease of a product that doesn’t require several different steps to use (painting, sanding, etc) !

Sunday Inspiration

WOW, wasn't it a beautiful weekend-just perfect to be outside or great weekend for the Zoo??? Today's layout "Little Animal" was created by Jansen Hebert using Reminisce Designs. I love they way she highlighted her little munchkin and pictures from the zoo. I know this title would have worked for my boys even if it didn't include zoo pictures, ha ha. Great job Jansen.

If you have had the privilege of taking Jody's wonderful classes over the years, please drop a line letting her know how special she is to us. You KNOW how i love fleur de lis

Yes, I totally fell in LOVE with these fleur de lis border stamps. Jade & Christy found this booth and can I tell you this rarely happens (except for CHA 2008) but we bought EVERY paper and EVERY stamp in the booth. YOU ARE GONNA LOVE THEM!!!!! And speaking of paper, Memory Mania has NEVER had so much paper ever, we have ordered over 300 NEW papers at CHA. I don't know how you will ever choose, they are all soooo awesome & unique. We had so much in the back that just in order to walk to the new stuff, we had to put a few lines out this week so far: Creative Imaginations, Cosmo Cricket, Heidi Swapp, Scenic Route, Glitz, Cloud 9, Cherry Arte, American Craft, Reminisce and HAMBLY!!!!

TRAVEL

These are the new papers from Heidi Swapp-They are just FABULOUS!! Oh, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let me recover faster so I can go on my trip to visit my friend, Simone, in LONDON on May 1st!!!! I could really take some cool pictures to scrapbook these papers!! Ok off to physical therapy.

Tim Holtz anything!

Honestly, my favorite tools is my paper trimmer... but pretty much anything by Tim Holtz is in my toolbox. I LOVE the splat mat - it cleans like a dream and keeps my workspace pretty neat. The new applicators for the Distress Inks is terrific and gives you more control and a better finish with the inks. If you haven't seen the DI applicators, they look very much like the one you use with Alcohol Inks, but specifically for the dry foam. The little misters are great for bleach (try filling one with bleach and spritzing it on cardstock - voila you have an interesting patterned paper!) blending solution (spritz on your alcohol inks for a fabulous effect) and the old stand by water for distressing. How convenient that the misters come in a 3 pack!

I'm also loving my texturizing hammer. It has 2 interchangeable heads and works wonders with Grungeboard or chipboard after it's been painted with a metallic color. Add a little distress ink and BAM! aged metal! He also has really cool scissors (I keep forgetting to bring those to classes to show off). They are very comfortable, have collapsing handles (sort of hard to explain) and they are self sharpening - you can even cut metal with them!

Those are my favorites for right now - but who knows what will happen when all of Memory Mania's CHA goodies are unveiled??? Night y'all!

Sunday Tip for Creating Albums:


STEP FIVE: Journaling. This may not be the case for you, but I find that I have trouble journaling when I’m cropping with my friends. I just can’t concentrate the way I want to. So I usually save this step for a time when I’m by myself. Do whatever you need to set the mood to journal, a nice cup of coffee or tea, light a candle or play some relaxing music. Then start journaling. When you get in the zone, you may be surprised that you can journal for an entire album in a couple of nights, when you're focused on the writing (I know some of you are saying, i hate to journal, i know, i know, but its so important, don't worry the ones reading it won't judge your grammar or spelling, write from your heart.

ALSO, if you’re traveling or waiting for your kids to finish an activity, this is a great project to bring along. All you need are your album and pens!
You finish that last paragraph of writing on that last page, and guess what. You my friend are done. You have finished an album!
It’s beautiful, it’s satisfying, and it’s done.

Now you and your family actually get to enjoy looking through the photos and remembering the fun times you shared. And it won’t take long at all. I am not exaggerating when I say that with this approach, working only one night a week, if you are willing to do simple layouts, you can complete an entire album in two months or less.
How’s that for motivation!

Working in this style can be satisfying because you can really see yourself"getting somewhere!" It makes sense . You may find that you actually work a lot faster, because you're not constantly switching gears from choosing photos, to being spacial, and laying them out, to being creative and decorating pages, to being verbal and journaling. It’s just hard sometimes to keep that many parts of your brain going, all at once!

With the assembly line, you only have to use one part of my brain at a time, and the arranging, decorating and journaling steps go SO MUCH more quickly, because you can get on a roll. Another side benefit, is that when you come to crops you won’t have to carry so much stuff! If you’re just cropping and arranging one night, you won’t need to bring your papers and embellishments, and if all you’re doing is decorating your pages, you won’t need your cropping tools. OH, IT’S SO LIBERATING! NOw, i'm not saying change the way you scrapbook, i'm saying try this to get some layouts completed & change the pace a bit. Happy Scrappin'!!!

Saturday's tip for Completing Albums:

Embellish. Once you have all your pages laid out, you’re finally ready to decorate and embellish. And you’ll be surprised when you see how fast this step actually goes, when you’re able to concentrate on just one thing, and are able to really get on a roll.

Another tip that will make this step move more quickly for you, is to, whenever possible, think in terms of two-page spreads. For one thing, they look nice. Your eye flows right across the pages, and they flow better than if you go with something completely clashing from the left page to the right.

Also, and this is what I really like about them, two-page spreads are TWICE AS EASY TO COMPLETE! Think about it: the thing that takes the longest to complete as you’re going along, is DECIDING HOW TO DECORATE YOUR PAGE! If you decorate each page individually, it takes you TWICE as long, as if you think of your two pages as ONE BIG LAYOUT.
Now that’s a good tip, if I do say so myself. You’re going to thank me for that one later, I just know it.

Friday's Tip for Completing Albums:

STEP THREE: Arranging. This is the fun part-Allow yourself a little extra space at your work station so you can actually lay several pages out at once. What you’re doing in this step, is deciding what pictures will go on what page, then loosely tacking them down to keep them temporarily in place (hermafix removable). What's cool about this step is because it gives you the freedom to get an idea of what the final layout of the album will look like, before you actually commit to anything. For example. I really like working with two page spreads. Let’s say I’m working on Valentine pictures. As I’m going along, I realize that they will all fit on the left-hand page. Problem is, I want my next group of photos to make a two-page spread. I have a couple of options. I can either spread my Valentine photos out onto a two page spread, or I can insert some miscellaneous photos onto the facing page. Either way, the result is that my next set of pictures will end up on facing pages as well. Or, I may find that after I’ve laid everything out, I have one extra photo remaining. I still have the flexibility to squeeze it in somewhere, or eliminate something else. All of these little problems would be big problems if I was completing my album page by page. I wouldn’t be able to make the little changes, because I’d already be locked into my layouts. But when you’re working assembly line, you can make corrections as you go. So are you still with me?

Then, we arranged and tacked them down with just a touch of adhesive, to the page.
